Sensitive souls might take offence at the political incorrectness of Mark Twain’s account of his voyage to Europe and the Holy Land – and yes, he does tend to make rather sweeping judgments, holds strong opinions about a lot of diverse subjects and certainly doesn’t mince his words. He admits: „I may be wrong… my judgment errs often, just as is the case with other men’s but it is my judgment, be it good or bad“ and states: „It may be thought that I am prejudiced. Perhaps I am. I would be ashamed of myself if I were not.“As a travel book it is obviously dated (having been published in 1869) but thanks to Twain’s ample general knowledge, amusing anecdotes, vivid prose, irreverence and marvellous wit it is still a great read.
Schade, dass man nicht 0 Sterne vergeben kann. Völlig unlesbar. Es sind so viele Fehler in dieser Ausgabe enthalten, dass große Teile weitgehend unverständlich sind - um nur zwei Beispiele zu nennen: es ist von „Video Games“ und „e books“ die Rede - in einem Werk von Mark Twain!!! Und dafür auch noch Geld zu kassieren, ist eine Unverschämtheit!Nachtrag: Da die Rezension offenbar bei allen Kindle-Ausgaben dieses Titels angezeigt wird diese Ergänzung: meine oben stehende Bewertung bezieht sich auf folgende Ausgabe:ProduktdetailsErscheinungstermin: 30. Der typisch Mark Twain'sche Humor. Der historische Kontext (Mitte des 19. Jh) interessant. Wer wusste beispielsweise dass es schon 1867 Kreuzfahrten gab und die grossen europäischen Städte über ein Eisenbahnnetz verbunden waren.Negativ die amerikanischen Klischees über Nichtamerikaner. Fast wie heute.
Ich habe das Buch gekauft als 'Vorbereitung' für meinen eigenen Urlaub, und war begeistert von der erfrischenden Art mit der Mark Twain Phänomene beschreibt, die man auch jetzt, hundert Jahre später, oftmals noch unverändert beobachten kann. Das Buch ist empfehlenswert für jeden, der durch eine Reise den Horizont erweitern möchte ohne dabei jedoch den Spaß aus den Augen zu verlieren.
